Monster hunters were essentially nocturnal animals.

Over the last few months, my daily schedule had been to progressively wake up later and later, until I was ready to have breakfast at 4pm, and meet for coffee at 5pm. The hunt began at 6pm.

There were, of course, monster attacks during the day as well. But they tended to be the fare that a freelancer or smaller group could handle. Conrad had bigger bucks in mind and reserved us for night hunts. We got nocturnal rates for that. But it also usually meant a harder hunt. Which meant higher pay.

I was used to weird hours. Being a trauma healer prepared me for that. And, after a few hunts, I began to get more and more used to the monsters.

A lot of my job was the same as it had been at the hospital. But my new friends, Brick most of all, were a lot hardier than my usual patients. More often than not, I was healing them while they were still hacking at the enemy.

When I wasn’t healing them, I was in the thick of things. I’d learnt how to shoot on the fly after Alex had been taken out by a giant vampire bat and I’d needed to cover him. Since then, I was picking up spare guns wherever I could. And, I had to admit, it was quite fun.

Throughout all this time though, I hadn’t been an official monster hunter. I was hunting under the auspices of Conrad’s tutelage. An intern, basically. It seemed my life was just internships from one place or another. But now, I was going to become an official, licensed monster hunter.

I couldn’t help but beam as I entered the Gravekeeper at 4am. The front door was unlocked. Only the owner and one of the waitresses were there, cleaning up after a long night. I waved at them in greeting. They smiled and waved back as I proceeded to Conrad’s office.

I stopped outside his door with its handwritten sign, and raised my hand to knock. I was the only member of the crew who knocked.

I grinned slyly as I reached to open the door instead.

“Come in, Ms Giles,” Conrad announced, before I could open the door.

Disappointed, I entered.

Conrad sat behind his desk. Since I had started working for him, his piles of paperwork had shrunk, grown, and been replaced by even more. I had since learnt that the monster hunting industry was not that anarchic, glory-loving industry that it seemed from the outside. There were a lot of rules. A lot of regulations. And a lot of forms.

Conrad didn’t have any filing cabinets, and had to deal with this litigious, bureaucratic nightmare out in the open.

“You really should invest in some filing cabinets,” I commented, as I closed the door behind me.

“That would let the paperwork win.” He smiled, slightly, cupping his hands on his desk. He’d cleared a small portion of it to make room for his hands.

I raised my eyebrow at that, as he gestured for me to sit.
